The 2013 Human Development Report – "The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World" – examines the profound shift in global dynamics driven by the fast-rising new powers of the developing world and its long-term implications for human development.
The Report identifies more than 40 countries in the developing world that have done better than had been expected in human development terms in recent decades, with their progress accelerating markedly over the past ten years. The Report analyzes the causes and consequences of these countries' achievements and the challenges that they face today and in the coming decades.
Each of these countries has its own unique history and has chosen its own distinct development pathway. Yet they share important characteristics and face many of the same challenges. They are also increasingly interconnected and interdependent.

País registra crescimento de 24% no IDH desde 1990 e cresce mais rápido que vizinhos latino-americanos. IDH do Brasil melhora em 2012; país mantém 85ª posição no ranking em relação a 2011.
O Brasil está entre os 15 países que mais conseguiram reduzir o déficit no IDH entre 1990 e 2012, uma trajetória que o coloca no grupo de “alto desempenho” em desenvolvimento humano. As conclusões são do Relatório de Desenvolvimento Humano 2013 – Ascensão do Sul: progresso humano num mundo diversificado, lançado hoje pelo Programa das Nações Unidas para o Desenvolvimento (PNUD).
A classificação de “alto desempenho” foi dada aos países que: tiveram desenvolvimento humano significativo pois, além de experimentar aumento do rendimento nacional, registram valores superiores à média nos indicadores de saúde e educação; reduziram o hiato necessário para alcançar o teto do Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano (IDH) – igual a 1 –; e tiveram desempenho melhor em relação a seus pares – países que se encontravam em patamares semelhantes em 1990.
